Lab for Efficient Embedded Systems

(Room G2.19)

Function and Equipment

The Lab for Efficient Embedded Systems is used for teaching and applied research on the design of digital systems. Particular focus is set on the design of complex embedded systems ("system-on-a-chip") with appropriate software ("hardware-software co-design") as well as real-time image processing.

The designed hardware can be implemented using programmable logic devices (FPGAs) or combined CPU/FPGA platforms (e.g. Xilinx Zynq), as they are increasingly used in many areas.

Topics in teaching

  • Fundamentals of computer-aided circuit and system design (hardware modeling, simulation, synthesis)
  • Hardware description languages (e.g. VHDL, SystemC)
  • Operating Systems
  • Software development for embedded systems
  • Efficient image processing
  • Basics of IC design

Topics in research

  • Industrial image processing
  • Image and signal processing for full and highly autonomous driving
  • Optical tracking, e.g. for augmented reality applications
  • Innovative computing architectures to accelerate applications using FPGAs
